The comedy musical Avenue Q was originally conceived as a TV show. Using children's shows like Sesame Street as the template for its satire, the story centers on the idea that kids are told from an early age that they can achieve anything, but that real life often presents a much bleaker picture. Directed by Jason Moore, with book by Jeff Whitty, the musical was conceptualized by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx. It opened at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in Connecticut in 2002. After moving to Broadway it earned three Tony Awards.
