Biggest Sports and Concert Tickets Stories of 2009

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

There was no lack of news in 2009 that impacted ticket values. In the world of sports, the unfolding Tiger Woods story, Michael Vick’s reinstatement and signing by the Eagles, Shaq’s move to the Cavaliers, and Manny Ramirez’s fifty game suspension from the Dodgers were all big news but:

The #1 sports tickets story in 2009 was the courtship and signing of Brett Favre by the Minnesota Vikings.

Rumors that Brett Favre might come out of retirement kept market prices for Minnesota Vikings tickets in the weeks around the fourth of July at about $125. On July 29th, however, Favre announced that he would stay retired — sending Vikings tickets market prices down to $103 the week of August 9th. On August 19th, Favre reconsidered and signed with the Vikings, whose ticket market prices rose and have stayed at about $150 since.

Concert tickets too were in the news in 2009. U2 tickets for their stadium tours were in huge demand. Blink 182 reunited and toured for the first time in years. The Weezer, Aerosmith, and Elton John/Billy Joel tours were interrupted by a bus crash, stage fall, and the flu, respectively. Kanye West’s interruption of the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) led to the end of the planned ‘Fame Kills’ tour with Lady Gaga, who is now headlining her own highly successful tour. Lady Gaga tickets are among the hottest concert tickets currently found with FanSnap. All exciting, but Kanye’s antics had another impact:

The #1 concert tickets story in 2009 is the rapid rise in popularity of Taylor Swift immediately following the VMAs

Market prices for Taylor Swift tickets during the summer had been holding steady at about $250. Immediately after the VMAs on Sep 13th, Taylor Swift ticket market prices rose to as high as $317 as demand exploded. Of course, demand creates supply as the Taylor Swift camp has subsequently added 34 dates to their tour, which is moderating market prices.

Super Bowl is the Most Viewed TV Show EVER

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

“About 106.5 million tuned into CBS’ telecast of Super Bowl XLIV on Sunday, making it the most watched TV program in the United States ever and topping the series finale of that network’s legendary wartime sitcom “MASH,” which drew 106 million viewers in 1983, according to Nielsen.” Joe Flint at The L.A. Times an interesting story about what the rating mean for media and how social media impacted the viewership.

PBSNewsHour talks about the Saints going home to New Orleans and “reawakening” the region. “It’s Mardi Gras 10 times over.”

Gregg Easterbrook of Tuesday Morning Quarterback on ESPN.com talks about the boldness of the Saints as being key to their victory, “Boldness was the key to the New Orleans victory — not just the onside kick to open the second half, but also Sean Payton’s decision to try for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal at the Colts’ 1-yard line, trailing 10-3. Though that play failed, the failure was a tremendous success — fortune favors the bold!” Read more here.

Oh yes, don’t forget the ads. CNNMoney put together a mash up of ads (you know how we love our mashups here at FanSnap). YouTube has them all here.

USA Today’s The Huddle is already talking Super Bowl XLV, “BetUS.com has released odds for the 2011 Super Bowl champion and the same Colts that lost just yesterday are the early favorites… They are followed by San Diego (8-1), New Orleans (9-1) and New England (10-1).”

Indy Fans Already Snapping up Colts tickets to AFC Championship Game

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Just like the MLB playoffs are all about pitching and defense, the NFL playoffs are about defense and the running game. The Colts welcomed Ray Lewis and the highly respected Ravens D to Indianapolis.  On this day though, it was the Colts D that dominated the game, holding the Ravens to just 3 points.

Peyton Manning was his typical, impeccable self, but where was the running game? The key question for Indy fans is whether Joseph Addai can be a factor. Indy fans believe the Colts can win and fans want to be at the game to see the Colts with the AFC championship and punch their ticket for Super Bowl XLIV at Land Shark Stadium in Miami.
