Predators Tickets Continue to be up Most Since the Olympics

March 9th, 2010

Last week, at the conclusion of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, we shared some interesting stats on how NHL Ticket Demand was on the Rise Following Thrilling USA - Canada Olympic Gold Medal Game

We said then, and it seems even more true today, that with a week to reflect, “sports fans around the world got to see hockey at its finest and they like what they saw.” We took a look at NHL ticket demand to see if the Olympic hockey interest was translating to the NHL. We found that  “demand is now surging for NHL tickets as hockey’s elite players return from Vancouver to resume the NHL season.”

Biggest Movers as of March 1: The following were the teams that saw the biggest demand in tickets while the  NHL season was on hiatus for the Olympics (Feb 12 - March 1).

  1. Nashville Predators (tickets) are up 10.57%
  2. Detroit Red Wings (tickets) are up 10.15%
  3. San Jose Sharks (tickets) are up 9.56%
  4. Pittsburgh Penguins (tickets) are up 9.14%
  5. St Louis Blues (tickets) are up 8.00%

So, a week later, with a week more of the NHL season under their belts, are the Olympics a distant memory? Was the thrill of the Gold Medal game just a blip on the NHL ticket demand radar, or have teams been able to parlay that excitement into something more lasting. We took a another look at those same teams to find out.

Biggest Movers as of March 8: This time we looked at the period between the start of the Olympics and today (Feb 12 - March 8).

  1. Nashville Predators (tickets) are up 60.51%
  2. Detroit Red Wings (tickets) are up 9.24%
  3. San Jose Sharks (tickets) are up 7.91%
  4. Pittsburgh Penguins (tickets) are up 15.97%
  5. St Louis Blues (tickets) are up 14.70%

The Predators continue to be the hot ticket with the biggest post-Olympic bump. The Pens and Blues are also up over last week. The Wings and Sharks, while they remain up since the Olympics are not up by as much as they were last week.

We just love singing “Free Falling” at the top of our lungs.

“Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, their first year of eligibility, and in recent years have continued to build on their already legendary success. The band’s sold-out 2008 tour was the biggest of their career and came right after the band’s acclaimed Super Bowl XLII halftime performance with a worldwide audience of nearly a billion people. The 2009 release of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ career spanning Live Anthology garnered glowing reviews including a rave four and a half stars from Rolling Stone. The 2007 release of the Peter Bogdanovich-directed documentary Runnin’ Down A Dream earned a Grammy award and established the Heartbreakers’ story as a striking embodiment of the American Dream.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their debut album in 1976. They have since sold more than 60 million records. Between the Heartbreakers’ recordings and his solo work, Tom Petty has received 18 Grammy nominations and been honored with lifetime achievement awards including Billboard’s Century Award, MTV’s Video Vanguard Award, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Tom Petty, with the Heartbreakers at his side, has become a rock and roll icon lauded by fellow musicians and music lovers worldwide. Tom Petty’s Sirius/XM radio show, Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure, is one of the most beloved and popular shows on satellite radio. It features Tom Petty spinning favorite tunes from his extensive private music collection.” Courtesy of TomPetty.com.

The site is worth checking out. It’s had a recent makeover. In addition to lots of good stuff on the band, for your listening pleasure, they have “Good Enough” from Mojo streaming on the site.

New Alice in Chains Tickets and Tour Dates Announced

March 6th, 2010

No CD collection in Seattle in the early 1990s was complete with out “Nevermind,” “Ten,” and “Dirt.” Nirvana’s “Nevermind” is credited with with being the most influential of the grunge albums and Pearl Jam’s “Ten” has been the most successful. Both Pearl Jam (tickets) and Nirvana had a nation wearing flannel, but many in Seattle and around the country call that third band their favorite. In 2005, the surviving members of Alice in Chains — Lead singer Layne Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002 –  Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez and Sean Kinney got Alice in Chains back together for a tsunami relief benefit in Seattle. The band had been mostly inactive since 1995. The relief benefit was a bit of a catalyst for Alice in Chains. The band hired a new lead singer, William DuVall, started playing dates and in 2009 released “Black Gives Way to Blue.”

“Black Gives Way to Blue” is Alice in Chains’ first album since 1995. The album marks a changing of the guard for Alice in Chains. With Layne Staley passed on, William DuVall is now lead vocals the, sharing duties with founding member Jerry Cantrell.

Alice in Chains (tickets) is on the road now and just announced spring dates. The current tour dates have the band mostly touring up and down the east coast with a brief foray into the upper Midwest.

Canada-USA Gold Medal Hockey was Most Watched Since Miracle on Ice

March 1st, 2010

According to the Media Decoder blog at the New York Times, “the Canada-USA gold medal hockey game was seen by a huge audience of 27.6 million viewers, making it the most-watched hockey game on American television since the famous U.S. upset over the Soviet Union in 1980.

SportsBusiness Daily calls the 17.6 Nielsen overnight For Gold Medal Game from 3:15-6:15pm ET, a 45.5% increase from the same matchup in ‘02.

Puck the Media has the regional breakdown and says, the audience peaked at 34.8 million viewers (18.6/34 hh rating) from 5:30-6 p.m. ET, when the USA’s Zach Parise(notes) (New Jersey Devils) sent the game to overtime with the tying goal with just 24.4 seconds left in regulation.
