• One thing is clear by these FanDemand Rankings: Canada loves its hockey. Five out of ten teams on the list are Canadian, with the top three spots all occupied by teams from the great white north.
• Toronto Maple Leafs tickets are the hottest in the league right now. They are undefeated, and look to be a threat into the playoffs.
• Vancouver is just settling down from a rowdy 2010 Olympic games and the preceding NHL playoffs where their Canucks got knocked out in the early rounds by the Blackhawks. Canucks tickets are second highest in FanDemand at $242.
• Boston loves it sports, especially when it comes to hockey. Bruins tickets are the 5th hottest in the league, just behind Pittsburgh Penguin tickets.

NHL FanDemand: Hottest Games this Season

1. Winter Classic: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals, 1/1/11: $604.00

• One thing is on hockey fans list of New Years Resolutions: getting tickets to the Winter Classic. This game will be a spectacle, with two of the most exciting players matching up against one another: Canadian golden boy Sidney Crosby vs. the Russian Alex Ovechkin. These teams will likely meet in the playoff’s, as well, so a lot is on the line for this New Year’s Day game.

2. Montreal Canadiens @ Toronto Maple Leafs, 4/9/11:  $403.00

• This intense intra-Canadian rivalry is definitely the biggest in Canada, if not all of the NHL. Tickets are going to probably increase as we get closer to this one. The Leafs look good so far this year, and the Canadiens are 3-1-1 despite the absence of their star player, Andrei Markov.

3. Chicago Blackhawks @ Vancouver Canucks, 11/20/10: $350.00

• Another heated rivalry, Vancouver-ites will pack Rogers Arena when the defending champs come across the border. The Hawks are one up on the Canucks already, with a 2-1 victory this month. Can goalie Roberto Luongo help his team bounce back and take the re-match?

4. Pittsburgh Penguins @ Toronto Maple Leafs, 2/26/11:  $350.00

• The Leafs host the Crosby and the Penguins in February, and may put Canadians in a tough spot. Deep down, they must be cheering for Sidney Crosby, who hit the gold-winning medal goal for his country last February in the Olympics. But in the end, Toronto will want a win here. Look for an exciting atmosphere inside the Air Canada Centre.

5. Tampa Bay Lightning @ Vancouver Canucks, 12/11/10: $349.00

• Interesting to see this game among the FanDemand ranks, considering the fact that Lightning tickets are the lowest in the league. But Canucks tickets are always a hot item, and every game for them is a must win. The Lightning will try to put a few in the net, past one of the better goalies in the league, Roberto Luongo.

6. Boston Bruins @ Montreal Canadiens, 1/8/11: $345.00

• The Bruins take on the Havs this January in what is the 6th hottest game this season. Goalie Tim Thomas has looked good for the Bruins so far this year, but Montreal will threaten early with their potent offense.

7. Pittsburgh Penguins @ Toronto Maple Leafs, 3/2/11:  $330.00

8. Chicago Blackhawks @ Toronto Maple Leafs, 3/5/11:  $330.00

9. Toronto Maple Leafs @ Vancouver Canucks, 12/18/10: $329.00

Last week, at the conclusion of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, we shared some interesting stats on how NHL Ticket Demand was on the Rise Following Thrilling USA – Canada Olympic Gold Medal Game

We said then, and it seems even more true today, that with a week to reflect, “sports fans around the world got to see hockey at its finest and they like what they saw.” We took a look at NHL ticket demand to see if the Olympic hockey interest was translating to the NHL. We found that  “demand is now surging for NHL tickets as hockey’s elite players return from Vancouver to resume the NHL season.”

Biggest Movers as of March 1: The following were the teams that saw the biggest demand in tickets while the  NHL season was on hiatus for the Olympics (Feb 12 – March 1).

1. Nashville Predators (tickets) are up 10.57%
2. Detroit Red Wings (tickets) are up 10.15%
3. San Jose Sharks (tickets) are up 9.56%
4. Pittsburgh Penguins (tickets) are up 9.14%
5. St Louis Blues (tickets) are up 8.00%

So, a week later, with a week more of the NHL season under their belts, are the Olympics a distant memory? Was the thrill of the Gold Medal game just a blip on the NHL ticket demand radar, or have teams been able to parlay that excitement into something more lasting. We took a another look at those same teams to find out.

Biggest Movers as of March 8: This time we looked at the period between the start of the Olympics and today (Feb 12 – March 8).

1. Nashville Predators (tickets) are up 60.51%
2. Detroit Red Wings (tickets) are up 9.24%
3. San Jose Sharks (tickets) are up 7.91%
4. Pittsburgh Penguins (tickets) are up 15.97%
5. St Louis Blues (tickets) are up 14.70%

The Predators continue to be the hot ticket with the biggest post-Olympic bump. The Pens and Blues are also up over last week. The Wings and Sharks, while they remain up since the Olympics are not up by as much as they were last week.

It’s less than two weeks before the 2009-2010 NHL season begins.  Who will be raising the Stanley Cup next summer?  I’m not sure; I’ll leave that to the folks in Las Vegas to figure out.  But I do know which teams’ fans are the most optimistic, based on the number searching on FanSnap:
