Biggest Sports and Concert Tickets Stories of 2009

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

There was no lack of news in 2009 that impacted ticket values. In the world of sports, the unfolding Tiger Woods story, Michael Vick’s reinstatement and signing by the Eagles, Shaq’s move to the Cavaliers, and Manny Ramirez’s fifty game suspension from the Dodgers were all big news but:

The #1 sports tickets story in 2009 was the courtship and signing of Brett Favre by the Minnesota Vikings.

Rumors that Brett Favre might come out of retirement kept market prices for Minnesota Vikings tickets in the weeks around the fourth of July at about $125. On July 29th, however, Favre announced that he would stay retired — sending Vikings tickets market prices down to $103 the week of August 9th. On August 19th, Favre reconsidered and signed with the Vikings, whose ticket market prices rose and have stayed at about $150 since.

Concert tickets too were in the news in 2009. U2 tickets for their stadium tours were in huge demand. Blink 182 reunited and toured for the first time in years. The Weezer, Aerosmith, and Elton John/Billy Joel tours were interrupted by a bus crash, stage fall, and the flu, respectively. Kanye West’s interruption of the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) led to the end of the planned ‘Fame Kills’ tour with Lady Gaga, who is now headlining her own highly successful tour. Lady Gaga tickets are among the hottest concert tickets currently found with FanSnap. All exciting, but Kanye’s antics had another impact:

The #1 concert tickets story in 2009 is the rapid rise in popularity of Taylor Swift immediately following the VMAs

Market prices for Taylor Swift tickets during the summer had been holding steady at about $250. Immediately after the VMAs on Sep 13th, Taylor Swift ticket market prices rose to as high as $317 as demand exploded. Of course, demand creates supply as the Taylor Swift camp has subsequently added 34 dates to their tour, which is moderating market prices.

Lady Gaga Collapses Backstage at Indiana Concert Cancels Concert

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Today, Lady Gaga cancels shows, including:

  • The Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City Saturday Jan. 16 — CANCELLED
  • The Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut, Sunday Jan. 18 — POSTPONED

Lady GaGa explained what was happening as it was happening via Twitter. In Lady Gaga’s words…

“I’ve been crying for hours, I feel like I let my fans down 2nite. An hour before the show, I was feeling dizzy and having trouble breathing”

Lady Gaga

“Paramedics came to take care of me, and told me my heart-rate was irregular– a result of exhaustion and dehydration.”

Lady Gaga

“can’t apologize enough for how sorry I am. I could hear my fans cheering from my dressing room, I begged everyone to let me go onstage.”

Lady Gaga

“My stage has complicated mechanical elements, everyone was concerned I’d be in danger during the 2hr show, since I had passed out earlier.”

Lady Gaga

“I am so devastated. I have performed with the flu, a cold, strep throat: I would never cancel a show just based on discomfort.”

Lady Gaga

“I hope you can forgive me. I love my little monsters more than anything, you are everything to me. I will make-up the performance on Jan 26.”

After canceling her Purdue concert moments before she was to go on stage Thursday night, Lady Gaga appeared on Oprah Live on Friday leaving fans confused as to why she could perform on Oprah and not at her concerts.

Here’s some Bad Romance lip dub awesomeness for Indiana Lady Gaga fans who now have to wait until January 26 to see the real Ms. Gaga. Don’t have Lady Gaga tickets yet? Find them with FanSnap.

Lady Gaga Falls on Stage Lands in Good Company

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Lady Gaga who tops our list of most in-demand concert tickets in November also seems to be top of mind in our collective conscious. You can’t talk music without hearing about Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift. Ms. Gaga just made news again by taking a bit of a dive on stage in Montreal as part of her Monster Ball tour.

What might be seen as funny or embarrassing to Lady Gaga actually gains her entry into a club with a very impressive membership. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler fell off the stage in South Dakota ending Aerosmith’s tour. There were even rumors Tyler would be dumped from the band.

Beyonce takes what looks like a horrific head-over-heals tumble down stairs at a concert in Orlando and pops right back up without missing a beat. (The sound is bad and the video is grainy, but you can see her fall seemingly very hard)

Madonna takes a minor spill on stage in Lisbon.

Even Bono has fallen down on stage.

Lil’ Wayne runs and slips and falls on his back.

Chris Martin of Coldplay falls while dancing in place.

Gaga fans love their Lady and a little misstep on stage won’t diminish that.

Lady GaGa, Jay-Z and Other 2009 AMA Perfomers On Tour Now

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

There was an abundance of great performances at the American Music Awards on ABC last night.

It’s not quite as fun watching awards show on the West coast since it’s not live by the time it airs and edits are made. For example i.e. J-Lo’s fall edited to look like a slow motion jump and Adam Lambert’s raunchy performance subdued.

One of the many great things about performances at award shows is that many of artists are normally touring or will be going on tour soon. Shakira, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas and Adam Lambert fall into the “please tour soon” bucket, but you can get tickets on FanSnap for the artists that performed below:

Lady GaGa Tickets

Lady GaGa maintained her shock-factor performance with “Bad Romance” and “Speechless.” Tickets for Lady Gaga’s tour sold out quickly on Ticketmaster last week. Fortunately, FanSnap has Lady GaGa tickets still available for the die-hard fans out there!

Daughtry Tickets

American Idol alum, Daughtry, sang “Life After You.” His tour is currently on the East coast with a November 30 show at the University of Florida’s O’Connell Center.

A list of Daughtry’s concert dates and ticket availability can be found by clicking here.

Kelly Clarkson Tickets

The first American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, sang “Already Gone” and as usual, gave a stellar performance. Kelly Clarkson’s tour is currently on the West coast and will be heading back East in December, wrapping up in New Orleans on December 13, 2009.

A list of Kelly Clarkson’s concert dates and ticket availability can be found by clicking here.

Keith Urban Tickets

Keith Urban sang his hit, “Kiss a Girl,” and has a few 2010 concerts dates, though he recently wrapped up his 2009 tour.

Alicia Keys Tickets

Alicia Keys debuted a new song, “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” and hasn’t formally announced a tour yet, but is playing at the Nokia Theatre in New York on December 1.

Jay-Z Tickets

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performed their now famous “Empire State of Mind” and were able to, once again, get me off the couch singing along. Jay-Z’s tour is in full swing.

A list of Jay-Z’s concert dates and ticket availability can be found by clicking here.

Black Eyed Peas Tickets

Fergie and her gang, Black Eyed Peas, gave an energetic two-song performance whilst singing live, “Meet Me Halfway” and “I Gotta Feeling”. Black Eyed Peas have two shows at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on December 29 and 30. You can find tickets on FanSnap for both shows.

Find Black Eyed Peas tickets by clicking here.

On a final note, congrats to Taylor Swift for winning artist of the year! Read more about Taylor Swift’s win here.

Taylor Swift Beats out Michael Jackson for AMA’s Artist of the Year

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Taylor Swift keeps on racking up awards. This time it was the American Music Awards. Taylor Swift took home  Favorite Female Pop / Rock Artist, Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist, Favorite Female Country Artist, Favorite Country Music Album (Fearless), and Artist of the Year.

Taylor Swift was rehearsing in London for the 2010 leg of her Fearless tour and could not attend the awards show. She was available “live via satellite” (I love how they still use that term) to accept her awards and was her gracious, adorable self.

Taylor Swift tickets continue to be among the hottest on FanSnap. In 2009, Taylor Swift tickets were second to only U2 tickets and Bruce Springsteen tickets in demand. In 2010, Lady Gaga is giving Taylor Swift a run for her money, at least in the ticket demand category. Lady Gaga clearly has a flare for the dramatic as you can see below from her performance at the AMAs.

We love that on our iPods, music award shows and the concerts we want to go to, a country girl singing about bad breakups while strumming the guitar and masked rocker singing “Gaga Ooh la la…” are at the top of the list.

David Itzkoff has more memorable moments from the AMAs in his pieces, Proud to Be an American: Remembering the 2009 American Music Awards here.

Read more about Taylor Swift here, here, here and here. Read more about Lady Gaga here, and here.

Lady Gaga and Beyonce Remix ‘Video Phone’

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Two of the biggest news makers in the music industry, Lady Gaga and Beyonce have a new video out for Beyonce’s ‘Video Phone.’ If only Taylor Swift was included, it would have been the perfect storm of female recording artists. Come to think of it, adding Taylor Swift to a song with Beyonce and Lady Gaga seems pretty tough, but would probably make for a pretty funny spoof video.

Here’s the real thing:

Lady Gaga tickets to her Monster Ball tour are among the hottest on FanSnap. Second only to Taylor Swift tickets at the moment.

Jim Farber of the New York Daily News has a review of the video here.
