2011 Interleague Play: MLB tickets and match-up rankings

This weekend marks the beginning of 2011 interleague play, or when the American and National Leagues face off in entertaining series that feature teams unfamiliar with one another. And even though the tradition has only been around since 1997, it still feels like a necessary part of every regular season.

As always, there are some entertaining match-ups to be had. Two of the most storied teams in all of sports meet in Boston, when the Cubs travel to Fenway to take on the Red Sox. Two powerhouse teams in the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers also meet in what some may call a preview of the 2011 World Series.

Which match-up is generating the most overall demand? We ranked each match-up according to the average ticket price of the series opener: check below for the Interleague Play FanDemand Rankings.

Interleague Play FanDemand: Series Openers, Friday May 20

  1. Cubs @ Boston Red Sox tickets: avg. $96
  2. Astros @ Toronto Blue Jays tickets: avg. $94
  3. A’s @ San Francisco Giants tickets: avg. $91
  4. Mets @ New York Yankees tickets: avg. $68
  5. Rangers @ Philadelphia Phillies tickets: avg. $64
  6. Nats @ Baltimore Orioles tickets: avg. $53
  7. Dodgers @ Chicago White Sox tickets: avg. $53
  8. Cards @ Kansas City Royals tickets: avg. $51
  9. M’s @ San Diego Padres tickets: avg. $50
  10. Reds @ Cleveland Indians tickets: avg. $36
  11. Rockies @ Milwaukee Brewers tickets: avg. $36
  12. Tigers @ Pittsburgh Pirates tickets: avg. $33
  13. Twins @ Arizona Diamondbacks tickets: avg. $32
  14. Rays @ Florida Marlins: avg. $28
  15. Braves @ Los Angeles Angels tickets: avg. $25

Probably the most anticipated series of the weekend is also #1 in FanDemand: Boston Red Sox tickets are the hottest in the league this weekend when the host the Chicago Cubs.

Defending World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, host their cross town rivals, the Oakland A’s, in a match-up that takes #3 in our FanDemand rankings.

As always, check back at FanSnap for the best possible MLB tickets at the best possible values.

2011 Home Openers Part II: Hottest MLB Tickets

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

This weekend, we get the rest of the 2011 MLB Home Openers. A week’s worth of action is in the books, and some of us still haven’t seen our team play a home game. That changes this weekend. As expected, Red Sox tickets are the hottest in the league this weekend. In close second is San Francisco Giants tickets, as they come home for the first time after winning last year World Series.

Who’s hot the hottest home opener this weekend? Check below for the average ticket prices of each game this Friday.

MLB Tickets: Home Openers, Friday April 8

Yankees - Red Sox a hot ticket

  1. Yankees @ Red Sox: $253
  2. Cards @ Giants: $226
  3. Royals @ Tigers: $127
  4. Rangers @ Orioles: $100
  5. Rays @ Sox: $93
  6. Athletics @ Twins: $93
  7. Phillies @ Braves: $92
  8. Cubs @ Brewers: $92
  9. Nationals @ Mets: $83
  10. Marlins @ Astros: $64
  11. Indians @ Mariners: $55
  12. Rockies @ Pirates: $54
  13. Blue Jays @ Angels: $54
  14. Reds @ Diamondbacks: $43
  15. Dodgers @ Padres: $33

The Cincinnati Reds are undefeated through 5 games, taking three off the Milwaukee Brewers and 2 more recently off of the Houston Astros. The Reds have had great run production, driving in 43 runs in those 5 wins. The Texas Rangers take the cake for the hottest team in the league, though. They have been killing it: 42 runs in 6 wins with a team batting average of .284. They beat up on the World Series favorite Red Sox, swept the Mariners, and now look to continue their win streak this weekend against the Baltimore Orioles. Look for Reds and Rangers ticket demand to ratchet up as the team have continued success on the field.

MLB Ticket Market Prices Higher in 2011

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

This weekend, you get to choose between the Final Four and MLB Opening Day /Home Openers. What a great weekend! In fact, we debated whether this weekend was the absolute best in sports. Is there a better one? Super Bowl weekend? NBA or MLB All-Star weekends? The start of March Madness? It’s a tough choice. Let us know what you think in the comments.

During Spring Training, we looked at MLB Opening Day ticket market prices so to channel our excitement on the eve of the 2011 MLB season, we thought it would interesting to compare MLB ticket prices this year versus the last year and 2009. We thought it would also be interesting to see which teams’ tickets are getting hotter and which fans were less excited about their teams prospects in 2011.

MLB Tickets Up in 2011… Sort of

We started with average ticket market prices across the league for every team for every home game. We compared tickets for the entire season as of today versus this time last year and this time in 2009. In aggregate, MLB ticket market prices are up in 2011 ($67) compared to 2010 ($64). But MLB ticket prices are still down compared to 2009 when baseball tickets averaged $74.

FanSnap: MLB Average Ticket Market Prices for Home Games by Season

Phillies, Red Sox, Twins, Rays, Rangers, Mets and Yankees tickets are up pretty substantially over last year. The Rangers and Rays fan remain energized after last season’s deep post season runs. The defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants tickets are up slightly, but not like you might guess after winning the fall classic.

We can’t wait to see what the 2011 season holds.

See you at the ballpark.

Independence Day Baseball

Monday, June 28th, 2010

On Independence Day, we celebrate what it means to be American, and part of that means celebrating baseball. That’s  probably why America’s past time tends to raise its ticket prices on the Fourth. Taking four series that overlap with the national holiday, we saw that the effect on MLB ticket prices was pretty significant. Out of four of the hottest baseball markets, ticket prices have jumped over 26% on July 4th versus the average of the other games in the series.

If you’re planning a trip to these parks this weekend, here are some good values on tickets in these four series:

Baltimore Orioles @ Boston Red Sox Tickets

July 2nd: Right Field Roof Box 91: $63

July 3rd: Right Field Roof Box 25, $74

July 4th: Bleachers 39, $41 each or Right Field Roof Box 31, $80 each

Toronto Blue Jays @ New York Yankees Tickets

July 2nd: Grandstand Dugout 419, $16 or Main Outfield 233A, $30

July 3rd: Bleachers 239, $23

July 4th: Grandstand Outield 434A, $18

Cincinnati Reds @ Chicago Cubs Tickets

July 2nd: GA Bleachers, $41

July 3rd: Club Box IF 11, $120

July 4th: Upper Deck Reserved IF 503, $13 or Club Box OF 4, $89

New York Mets @ Washington Nationals Tickets

July 2nd: Left Field Corner 109, $20

July 3rd: Infield Club 215, $110

July 4th: Left Field Reserved 103, $35

Is it Better to be a Red Sox or Yankees Fan?

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

And so the rivalry continues… Is it better to be a Sox fan or a Yanks fan? It seems like this is the consensus: While it’s better for your eternal soul to be a Red Sox fan, it’s much better for your wallet to be a Yankees fan.

That’s right, for the upcoming three home series at Yankee Stadium, the average ticket price is currently $79.73, while at Fenway, for the next four home series the average is $134.31. That means Red Sox fans will pay an average of 68% more for tickets into early August.

That being said, in a comparable seat breakdown for both team’s upcoming home games (SEA @ NY, TB @ BOS), prices are pretty similar :

Yankee Stadium…………………….vs………………….Fenway Park

Grandstand Outfield 408 – $36          vs.          Outfield Grandstand 5 – $45

Field Infield 127 A – $219                    vs.          Loge Box 144 – $188

Field Dugout 115 – $289                      vs.           Field Box 16 – $219

In the next month or so, both teams travel to three of the same cities.  This is what we found at those parks.  With the exception of Seattle, Yankees away games average a slightly higher ticket price.  That may be a very small silver lining for Sox fans.

Upcoming Red Sox and Yankee Away Series: Average Ticket Prices

Count one for Yankees fans, they certainly have the edge when it comes to finding deals on tickets in the near future.  It’s probably because there isn’t a bad seat at Fenway Park.  With that in mind, here’s some of the best ticket deals available currently for the next Red Sox home game against rival Tampa Bay Rays:

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers Face the Red Sox at Fenway

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

The prodigal son returns for Father’s Day Weekend! If you miss Manny being Manny, you won’t want to miss Red Sox face the Dodgers in a three game series this upcoming weekend right here at Fenway Park. Love him or hate him, Manny Ramirez is finally coming back to Boston on Friday the 18th. It seems the Fenway Faithful are very aware of the significance of this series.  Average ticket prices have sky-rocketed for this series in comparison with the previous series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.  While both are home, out of division and out of league series, the the average ticket price for the Arizona series is $73.40 while the average ticket price for the Dodgers series is $188.45.  Tim Wakefield is expected to start Friday night for the series opener. Although Saturday’s game tickets are averaged lower than Fridays, the best value for a fan is certainly watching Clay Buchholz pitch in Sunday’s game. Currently at an average price of $168.40, take Dad to watch the Sox youngest ace for an awesome Father’s day gift.

MLB Opening Day and Home Openers

(ALCS Update) Yankees beat the Angels in Game 6 and take the series 4-2. It’s World Series time! Game 1 is on Wednesday.

The Phillies have done it. They beat the Dodgers and crushed SoCal fans’ hopes for a freeway series. With the win tonight over the Dodgers, the Phils are once again in the Fall Classic. They await an opponent. Will it be the Yankees or the Angels? The Yankees are up 3-1 over the Angels. For Yankees fans, the memory of the 2004 ALCS against the Red Sox is still too fresh in their minds to be overly confident of a World Series berth.

So, the Phillies celebrate and wait at least one more night to learn where they’ll travel to on Wednesday for Game 1 of the World Series. You can bet, we’ll be watching the Angels – Yankees game.

We’ve add the Phillies World Series home games to the calendar below with links to tickets for each game.

Christian

There is some debate at FanSnap HQ as to whether this is our favorite time of year… Or, is it a very close second to March when every team is still in the hunt. Oh, and that other tournament is getting started.

The verdict? Now is pretty great. The Rockies made us (and the Dodgers) sweat the final few games of the regular season and the Twins had us biting a towel like Jerry Tarkanian during that Tigers one-game playoff. Now, we’re trying to squeeze in a little work between watching playoff games.

Here are the playoffs in one, handy calendar. Down below, you know we’re keeping track of ticket availability and ticket prices as well as wins and losses.

Championship Series Tickets:

(Update) Once again, It’s CC and A-Rod as the Yankees take Game 4

(Update) Angels take ALCS Game 3 in 11 innings. Phillies take Game 4 with a walk off.

(Update) Just when we think we see what clutch playoff pitching is in CC Sabathia, Cliff Lee blanks Dodgers in 11-0 Phillies Game 3 win.

(Update) Yankees win in 13 innings (and 5 hours). Lead series 2-0. The Angels and Yankee travel to LA for Game 3.

(Update) The MLB Championship series teams are set. The Yankees take on the Angels and the Phillies take on the Dodgers. “Sold out” of course never really means sold out. There are tens of thousands of tickets listed in the ticket market for the ALCS and NLCS. We dug into the data and came up with the chart below, which compares the first home game tickets for each of the teams to get a feel for the hottest MLB playoff team.

Ticket prices as of 2:00 p.m. (PT) Oct. 13, 2009. This chart compares ticket prices to the NLCS and ALCS home games for the Yankees, Angels, Phillies and Dodgers

Division Series Tickets:

(Update: Oct. 12) The Phillies clinch NLCS berth after winning the NLDS series against the Rockies 3 to 1.

(Update: Oct. 11) The Dodgers are the first team to clinch a Championship Series berth after sweeping the Cards in three games in the NLDS. The NLCS tickets and calendar updated below.

(Update 2: Oct. 11) The Yankees and Angels sweep the Twins and Red Sox. Boston’s hopes for the Yankee – Red Sox showdown in the ALCS came to an end today. The Yankees – Red Sox is one of the most storied rivalries in all of sports. We’re sorry we didn’t get to see it play out in one last series this year.

The Twins’ Cinderella story also came to an end today. The Twins embodied so much of what we love about the post season. Their run was a thrill to watch. We look forward to seeing them in their new ballpark next year.

Two MLB powerhouses remain. The Yankees and the Angels — two teams that seemed destined to meet in the ALCS. We’ve reworked the playoff calendar below to reflect the ALCS dates and of course, ticket availability and pricing.

FanSnap’s Most Popular Baseball Tickets in August

Friday, September 4th, 2009

The dog days of summer are over.  The kids are back in school.  Starbucks is serving the pumpkin spice latte again.  Entourage on HBO is nearing its last episode of the year.  That can only mean one thing.  The MLB pennant race has started.

Which team and tickets are the hottest?  Well, based on searches on FanSnap, the top ten (including a big upcoming homestand at sweet, sweet prices) are:

1.  Boston Red Sox tickets:  Angels @ Red Sox, 19,000+ tickets from $11

2.  New York Yankees tickets:  Red Sox @ Yankees, 41,000+ tickets from $28

3.  Chicago Cubs tickets:  Reds @ Cubs, 18,000+ tickets from $11

4.  LA Dodgers tickets:  Giants @ Dodgers, 26,000+ tickets from $3

5.  SF Giants tickets:  Rockies @ Giants, 12,000+ tickets from $9

FanSnap’s Most Popular Baseball Tickets in July

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

The All Star Game is in the rear view mirror.  It is the home stretch.  The time when division winners and wild cards are set.  Every game matters in a pennant race.  The teams that are out of it have shed payroll, while contenders picked up that extra arm or bat.  There are many teams still in the hunt, and their fans are pumped!

Which teams are these loyal baseball fans searching for most on FanSnap?  Let’s have a look, and guess what – they each have an interesting home series coming up soon, in some cases at really amazing values:

1.  New York Yankees tickets:  Red Sox @ Yankees, 60,000+ tickets from $28*

2.  Chicago Cubs tickets:  Phillies @ Cubs, 15,000+ tickets from $15

3.  Philadelphia Phillies tickets:  Mets @ Phillies, 23,000 tickets from $22

4.  Boston Red Sox tickets:  Yankees @ Red Sox, 9,000+ tickets from $98

5.  New York Mets tickets:  Phillies @ Mets, 24,000+ tickets from $16

6.  Chicago White Sox tickets:  Red Sox @ White Sox, 21,000+ tickets from $5

7.  SF Giants tickets:  Dodgers @ Giants, 6,000+ tickets from $26

8.  St. Louis Cardinals tickets:  Cubs @ Cardinals, 8,000+ tickets from $22

9.  LA Angels tickets:  Rays @ Angels, 13,000+ tickets from $4

10. LA Dodgers tickets:  Cubs @ Dodgers, 41,000+ tickets from $5

The Yankees really solidified their #1 position on our list, as the team has gained their stride.  At the same time, the Cubs and Phillies moved up several slots from June, bumping the Red Sox and the Mets down the list.

In an interesting twist, Giants fans are outsearching their Dodgers rivals two to one!  No doubt, the 2009 MLB Playoffs are going to be great!

Red Sox @ Yankees Four Game Homestand!

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Never mind that the Yankees are 0-8 this year against the Red Sox.

The Yankees are battling for the best record in baseball with the Dodgers.  They have won three in a row.  They are two and a half games up on the boys from Boston.  Bronx Bomber fans are already calculating their magic number.  This weekend is as good a chance as any for the Pinstripes to reassert their dominance.

While the Rays may have something to say about it, nothing beats a Yankees-Red Sox series, even during the dog days of summer.  However, lots of season ticket holders must be out of town on vacation as there are thousands of ticket listings available for as little as $50 a ticket.*

Haven’t seen a game in the new Yankee Stadium yet?  Have a look at all the Red Sox-Yankees tickets on FanSnap this weekend!

Thu, Aug 6 at 7:05PM 800+ tickets from $80*

Fri, Aug 7 at 7:05PM 6,000+ tickets from $72

Sat, Aug 8 at 4:10PM 6,000+ tickets from $79

Sun, Aug 9 at 8:05PM 10,000+ tickets from $50

Of course, on FanSnap you can see the tickets from all four games at once!

FanSnap’s Most Popular Baseball Tickets in June

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Start spreading the news…

Lovers of the nation’s pastime, driven by the great choices and values to be had, have been all over FanSnap this summer searching for MLB tickets.  Vacationing fans are visiting ballparks.  Baseball fans are sitting in seats they never thought they could afford.

What teams are baseball fans searching for most?  And where are they playing on July 4th?

1.  New York Yankees tickets:  Jays @ Yankees, 8,000+ tickets from $16*

2.  Boston Red Sox tickets:  Mariners @ Red Sox, 2,000+ tickets from $16

3.  New York Mets tickets:  Mets @ Phillies, 4000+ tickets from $19

4.  LA Angels tickets:  Orioles @ Angels, 3,000+ tickets from $14

5.  Chicago Cubs tickets:  Brewers @ Cubs, 6000+ tickets from $20

6.  SF Giants tickets:  Astros @ Giants, 2,000 tickets from $11

7.  Chicago White Sox tickets:  White Sox @ Royals, 700+ tickets from $6

8.  LA Dodgers tickets:  Dodgers @ Padres, 1000+ tickets from $20

Most interesting as they are both in the Big Apple and have new ballparks, Yankees searches outnumber Mets searches two to one…

Me?  I am going to SF’s AT&T Park Saturday to see Cy Young winning phenom Timmy Lincecum blow away Astros!  Happy Fourth of July!

Great MLB Ticket Bargains

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

The FanSnap team was excited to read “Tightwad Tod’s” column today in Consumer Reports.  He said,

“…when I checked FanSnap for tickets to a host of events there were plenty of bargains. They may not be the best seats or the hottest games, but I found tickets to see the Redsox in Boston for as little as $15, and seats at the new Yankee and Busch stadiums in New York and St. Louis for $8 and $3, respectively.

Reasonably priced tickets were available to other events as well, though you might have to travel to Fargo, N.D., Columbus, Ohio, or Charleston, West Va., to score the knockout deals, such as $20 to go country with Keith Urban, $22 to see Elton John and Billy Joel tickle the ivories, or $33 to get your scream on with the Jonas Brothers.”

Thanks, Tod.  We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

There is a wide choice of tickets available as season ticket holders skip more games than usual because of the economy.  Market prices of tickets are always influenced up or down by whether there are more buyers or sellers.  No matter what, among all those sellers, there are always a few who are particularly motivated to sell and drop their asking price.  You’ll notice their tickets right away – they are the lighter colored markers and the “best value” stars on the FanSnap Maps.

It may be a matter of getting a super deal on a ticket.  It may be a matter of splurging and sitting behind home plate, or next to the stage, for a much lower price than in past years.  Whether you are on a beer or champagne budget, our goal is to help you find great values!

Red Sox Tickets Going Fast!

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

There’s nothing like a home opener at Fenway.  Red Sox Nation is lined up to see Beckett vs. Shields and the upstart Rays.  We have been watching FanSnap ticket listings for opening day in Boston for a while now.  In the last several days, fans have been wolfing up tickets!

As of tonight, FanSnap search results still show 400+ Red Sox tickets available from five ticket companies – Ace Ticket, eBay, Pat’s Ticket Center, StubHub, and TicketNetwork.  While the Monster tickets are gone, there are still tickets available all over the park!  Check out the zoom, and view from seat, features on the FanSnap Map for Fenway to see the values.  Thinking of going?  Better check quick!

Can’t make the game tomorrow?  No problem, a FanSnap ticket search shows thousands of ticket listings per game all season long, including that first Red Sox-Yankees home stand.

Also, many thanks to Thomas Grillo for his profile of FanSnap in tomorrow’s Boston Herald!
