2011 Home Openers Part II: Hottest MLB Tickets

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

This weekend, we get the rest of the 2011 MLB Home Openers. A week’s worth of action is in the books, and some of us still haven’t seen our team play a home game. That changes this weekend. As expected, Red Sox tickets are the hottest in the league this weekend. In close second is San Francisco Giants tickets, as they come home for the first time after winning last year World Series.

Who’s hot the hottest home opener this weekend? Check below for the average ticket prices of each game this Friday.

  2. Cards @ Giants: $226
  3. Royals @ Tigers: $127
  4. Rangers @ Orioles: $100
  5. Rays @ Sox: $93
  6. Athletics @ Twins: $93
  7. Phillies @ Braves: $92
  8. Cubs @ Brewers: $92
  9. Nationals @ Mets: $83
  10. Marlins @ Astros: $64
  11. Indians @ Mariners: $55
  12. Rockies @ Pirates: $54
  13. Blue Jays @ Angels: $54
  14. Reds @ Diamondbacks: $43

The Cincinnati Reds are undefeated through 5 games, taking three off the Milwaukee Brewers and 2 more recently off of the Houston Astros. The Reds have had great run production, driving in 43 runs in those 5 wins. The Texas Rangers take the cake for the hottest team in the league, though. They have been killing it: 42 runs in 6 wins with a team batting average of .284. They beat up on the World Series favorite Red Sox, swept the Mariners, and now look to continue their win streak this weekend against the Baltimore Orioles. Look for Reds and Rangers ticket demand to ratchet up as the team have continued success on the field.

Hottest MLB Opening Day and Home Opener Baseball Tickets

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Spring training is well underway, and for the next month, baseball fans can get a preview of what their teams may look like come the regular season. It’s the last chance to have those arm-chair debates about who might be better this season, or what teams may be “this year’s” San Francisco Giants, as come April, its time to play ball.

Opening Day is officially  March 31 this year, with the first two official games are scheduled as the Atlanta Braves at the Washington Nationals and the Detroit Tigers at the New York Yankees. By the end of the day on April 1st, every team in the league will have played a regular season game (or two).

If our Spring Training Ticket Preview is any indication of what ticket prices may do on Opening Day, we would expect to see Philadelphia Phillies tickets, Boston Red Sox tickets, and New York Yankees tickets in the highest demand. Check out the Hottest Opening Day tickets, according to their average price, below.

MLB Opening Day Tickets: Thursday March 31st

  1. San Francisco Giants @ Los Angeles Dodgers: $185
  2. San Diego Padres @ St. Louis Cardinals: $175
  3. Detroit Tigers @ New York Yankees: $173
  4. Milwaukee Brewers @ Cincinnati Reds: $171
  5. Los Angeles Angles @ Kansas City Royals: $111
  6. Atlanta Braves @ Washington Nationals: $60

It is a strange day indeed when New York Yankees tickets are not among the hottest in the league. Perhaps this is a product of the growing skepticism around the team and the holes in their pitching staff.

No surprise to see the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants at the top; tickets to their opening away game in LA are averaging $10 more than Padres-Cardinals tickets.

2011 Spring Training Preview: Who has the Hotter Tickets?

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Football is over, March Madness is weeks away, and the days are ever-so-slightly getting longer. That can only mean one thing: the 2011 Major League Baseball Season is within reach. For the next six weeks, Arizona and Florida host the annual MLB Spring Training.

For locals in the area, or vacationers looking to catch some sun and baseball on spring break, Spring Training is a great way to get in on some early baseball action. The small, obscure ballparks used for the games let fans get super close to their favorite stars. The way certain players come out in spring training can at times foreshadow how they play in the regular season. It is also the first time that fans can see their favorite teams new trade and free agent acquisitions in their home -team jersey. This spring, there a plenty of those to be tossed around.

The Boston Red Sox made headlines in the off-season with a slew of big name pick ups. Sluggers Adrian Gonzales and Carl Crawford now wear the Boston “B”, as does the Bosox’ newest addition the the bullpen, Bobby Jenks. The Red Sox lineup is different, but don’t be fooled, as they are favorites to win the American League this year.

In the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies have put together one of the deadliest pitching rotations in the history of the game. The Phillies snagged Cliff Lee, easily the hottest target of the off-season, in a move that firmly placed them in contention for a National League title.

Spring Training tickets are a great way to bring in the new baseball season, and FanSnap can help fans get the best tickets.

Most Searched Sports Tickets of 2010

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

As 2010 winds down, we’re taking a look at which teams generated the most searches over the year. We previously put out our 2010 Overall Most Searched Rankings, or what was most searched for on the website overall, whether it be a ballgame, a musical artist, or a theatre production.  Sports teams dominated the  overall top 10. In fact, six of the ten were all sports teams from around the country.

There is no real down time in the world of sports. It seems there is always something going on, whether it be the mid-summer MLB season or the springtime intensity of NCAA March Madness. So how do teams stack up against one another? Below you will find the hottest franchises of 2010, based on fan searches.

Hottest Franchises of 2010

  1. New York Yankees
  2. San Francisco Giants
  3. Boston Red Sox
  4. Boston Celtics
  5. Los Angeles Lakers
  6. Chicago Blackhawks
  7. New York Mets

The New York Yankees are the overall #1 most searched, and it wasn’t close. With more than double the searches of the next team (the San Francisco Giants) the Yankees remain the hottest franchise in sports. We’ve covered the Yankees all year on our New York Blog: check it out if you’re a die-hard Yankees fan always looking to score some Yankees tickets.

Everyone knows Boston is obsessed with their sports teams, and our data proves this point, placing the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins all within the Top 15 Most Searched. The Red Sox had a tough year, missing the playoffs, but the Celtics are on a tear, atop their division and looking well ready for a solid push into the playoffs. Seen our Boston Blog? Check it out for all the best info on Boston tickets.

The two MLB World Series contestants are in our top 15: no doubt, the excitement generated around this event drove up search inputs for both the Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants. Los Angeles sports fans made a strong showing as well: the Lakers and the Dodgers both grab a spot in the illustrious top 15.

The Hottest Tickets of 2010

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Whether you were trying to catch a baseball game in the Bronx, a concert at Gillette Stadium, or a live show on Broadway, FanSnap had you covered the whole way. Our unique position as the leading ticket shopping-comparison site allows us to see what fans really want. So what was the hottest team, concert or show of 2010? We’ve put together a series of posts to let you know. We’ll start it off with the 10 most searched terms on FanSnap for the past year, overall.

2010 Overall Most Searched Tickets

  1. New York Yankees
  2. Justin Bieber
  3. San Francisco Giants
  4. Boston Red Sox
  5. Taylor Swift
  6. Boston Celtics
  7. Lady Gaga
  8. Los Angeles Lakers
  9. Chicago Blackhawks
  10. Black Eyed Peas
  • If there was any doubt that the New York Yankees are one of the biggest names in all of sports, their comfortable #1 spot atop our Annual FanDemand rankings should dispel any nonbelievers. The Yankees are a perfect storm of popularity: they have some of the best current players in the game (Jeter, Rodriguez, Sabathia, Cano, to name a few), they play in the world’s biggest sports market, and they win a ton of ball games. Fans throughout the world simply love the Yankees, and it is no surprise to see them so high in our 2010 Most Searched Tickets list.
  • Notice that the top three of four spots are all occupied by baseball teams. The Yankees, Giants, and Red Sox are all seriously popular teams. But part of the MLB dominance may be due to the high volume of regular season baseball games (162). Simply, the more games, the more possibilities for fans to see their favorite team in the flesh, and the more searches for those tickets on our ticket database.
  • Justin Bieber definitely had a great year, and he is hands down the hottest artist of the year according to our search results. Hard to believe he is only sixteen, but expect Bieber to continue to dominate the American music scene.
  • The Black Eyed Peas had a monstrous year as well. They released a number of hits, and performed at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. They performed concerts all over the world, and avid Black Eyed Peas fans found the best tickets at FanSnap.
  • Country music is still prominent in the American music scene, as artist Taylor Swift is fifth in our Most Searched rankings.

We’ll be releasing more Top 10 of 2010 lists, like top sporting events and hottest tour stop of 2010. And as always, if you are in the market for tickets, look no further than FanSnap to get you the best possible tickets for the best possible value.

2010 MLB World Series: Best Value tickets

Monday, October 25th, 2010

The World Series is upon us, and there is no one more excited about the upcoming series between the San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers than FanSnap.

Two of the most dominant pitchers of the last decade face off in what might be among one the most anticipated Game 1 pitching match-ups in World Series history: Cliff Lee vs. Tim Lincecum. And it only gets better from there, as these two ball clubs have proven that they have the strong pitching that is required to win in the post-season.

The Rangers may have a more potent offense, as potential MVP Josh Hamilton and third-baseman Michael Young are some of the best bats in the game right now. But the Giants can tough it out when it’s close, having won six of their post-season games by one run or less.

The World Series is one of the biggest sporting events of the year. World Series tickets are among the hottest of any event in the country. Check out FanSnap’s Best Value Tickets below:

2010 MLB Playoff Tickets: ALCS and NLCS Breakdown

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

So far, the 2010 MLB Playoffs have been a mix of spectacular individual performances and disappointing team play. Roy Halladay’s no hitter, only the second to ever to be thrown in the history of the MLB Playoff’s, was probably the biggest of them all. It was something so surreal to watch: the crowd, the atmosphere, the Doc’s humble reaction and respect for the game in his post game interviews. Those types of moments are why we love sports.

Then there was Tim Lincecum’s 14 strike-out shut out against the Atlanta Braves, which was another remarkable pitching performance. The slider Tim relied on, which got him so many strikeouts, was one he had developed only a month earlier when he and Matt Cain played around with a new grip on the ball. Great stuff!

At the other end of the spectrum, some teams just never showed up to play. The Minnesota Twins were swept, and never looked like a team capable of beating the Yankees. As for the Reds, they just looked flat. And the Braves suffered from miserable fielding errors which ultimately lost them the deciding game in the series.

But, enough of all that. We move on. It’s time for the League Championship Series.

ALDS and NLDS: Average Ticket Price Comparisons

  • NLCS tickets, for the entire series, are averaging $447, which is 50% higher than the ALCS average ticket price of $298.

2010 MLB Playoff Tickets: The ALDS and NLDS Breakdown

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

The 2010 Major League Baseball Playoffs are finally here. The regular season ended with some tight races for playoff spots, and much of that excitement has carried over into what will prove to be a great month of October baseball. Baseball fans from coast to coast are gearing up to cheer on their respective teams. Check out some of the data we collected from the secondary ticket market on how fans are reacting to their team’s playoff bids.

2010 MLB Playoffs: Division Series FanDemand

  • Cincinnati Reds tickets are bringing in the highest overall average price of $276 to their home NLDS games. When the Phillies traveled to Cincinnati in the regular season (June 28-30), tickets average $35. Thats a 600% increase in ticket prices. Think Reds fans are excited to see their team in the playoffs for the first time since 1995?
  • One might think that New York Yankees playoff tickets are off the charts, as Yankees fans are flat out passionate, when actually, they aren’t all that different from regular season prices. Yankees tickets, at home, in the ALDS are averaging $140. When the Minnesota Twins came to the Bronx in May of this year, tickets averaging around $95. That’s still a 48% increase from regular to post-season, but is more expected out of die-hard New York Yankees fans?
  • Minnesota is ready and waiting for their Twins to take on the Yankees. Check out Mayor of Minneapolis, R.T. Ryback’s tweet below:

  • It looks like the excitement of the regular season playoff race has left San Francisco Giants fans wanting more. Giants tickets are the second highest for their NLDS home games at $220.
  • Tampa Bay Rays tickets are the lowest of the bunch at a meager $77, which only reaffirms the idea that there isn’t much of a market for professional sports in the state of Florida.

  • The Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds series is generating the most excitement in the playoffs with an average series ticket price of $231.
  • The Yankees and Twins are next, with Twins fans driving up this overall average price. Twins home games during this series are generating, on average, a $50 higher price than Yankees home games.

  • Overall, the American League Division Series games are averaging a $150.5 ticket price, while both National League Division Series are $199.5 in average ticket price. This is a substantial and surprising difference, considering that during the regular season, the American League almost always brings in higher prices overall.

Price variation on comparable tickets, by home team during the Division Series

  1. Comparable tickets in Cincinnati vary by as much as 84%.
  2. Comparable tickets in Tampa Bay vary by as much as 83%.
  3. Comparable tickets in Texas vary by as much as 81%.
  4. Comparable tickets in San Francisco vary by as much as 69%.

San Francisco Giants Face a Tickets Giant, Stephen Strasburg

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Stephen Strasburg’s next projected start is at home against San Francisco on July 9th.  His last few “humanizing” starts don’t seem to have diminished Strasburg’s stardom. And if they have, fans in D.C didn’t get the memo. As we’ve mentioned before, Strasburg has a biggest impact on tickets of pitcher in the MLB.

Strasburg’s crazy impact on tickets continues as the San Francisco Giants come to Washington for a series, July 9th – July 11th.  Strasburg will likely face Matt Cain. In fact, the ticket differential between Strasburg- and non-Strasburg starts is as large as ever. The average price of July 9th Nats tickets currently stands at $75.87 for the phenom’s next start. Comparing this with average Nationals ticket prices from the other two games in the Nats-Giants series, $28.80, we see a 163% increase in ticket price on the market when Strasburg is expected to pitch. Even after an unspectacular five innings against the Mets on July 3rd where he allowed two earned runs, with five Ks, it is clear that Nats fans want to watch Steven Strasburg significantly more than any of their other starters.

Here’s a look at the price differential for Strasburg’s previous home starts as well as his upcoming start against the Giants:

So although Strasburg’s first home start against the Pirates saw an unprecedented increase in ticket pricing versus other games in that series, this upcoming series against the Giants is nearly as impressive. Even after four home games, when Strasburg pitches, the average ticket price goes up three fold. Guess the “Strasburg Effect” is proving to be a lasting phenomenon.

Red Sox Road Trip Drives Up Ticket Demand in Colorado and San Francisco

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

No doubt, the Boston Red Sox are one of the biggest names in baseball, if not all of sports. And with this popularity comes fluctuations in ticket prices when they travel on road trips. This week, the Sox leave the friendly confines of Fenway Park for a six-game road trip against the Rockies and the Giants. Fans in Colorado and the Bay Area should be aware of the potential affect the BoSox will have on your ticket prices.

In Colorado, the Rockies face the Red Sox in a three game series from the 22nd of June through the 24th. Average tickets prices for these three games are $80, $78, and $93, respectively. Compare this with the $51 dollar average price for all Rockies tickets for the rest of the season, and it’s quite clear of the Red Sox effect.

The Rockies – Sox game on June 23rd fans can find tickets in Infield Box 23 (along the first base line) for $74 dollars and save 50% from the average price of $144.

Prices are similarly affected in San Francisco. The average ticket prices for this three game series are $105 on the 25th of June, $113 on the 26th, and $113 on the 27th — up substantially over the $58 dollar average price for Giants tickets. You can still snag great seats well below these prices. Left Field Bleacher seats can be found for $50 dollars at Fansnap, saving you 39% off the average price of  $84 dollars.
Below are a few of the best tickets values at both Coors Field in Denver and AT&T Park in San Francisco.
