Henry Lee Higginson founded the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1881. It has had some notable conductors such as Arthur Nikisch (1889-1893), Pierre Monteux (1919-1924) and Serge Koussevitzky (1874-1951) under whom the orchestra became extremely popular. The orchestra gave some brilliant radio broadcasts under the baton of Koussevitzky. These broadcasts ran from 1926 through 1951 and later from 1954 through 1956. They still continue to make regular live broadcasts on the radio.
