Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical opened off-Broadway in October 1967. With a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, using music by Galt McDermot, Hair centers on of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s. Because of the nature of its text and the profanity used in the music, it has been steeped in controversy since its premiere, but Hair was also one of the first rock musicals to use a racially diverse cast, and productions are known for inviting audience members on stage for the finale.
