Based on the 1988 film by the same name, Hairspray is a musical which features 1960s style dance music and downtown R&B. It tells the story of a zaftig teenager who fulfils her dream of dancing on a national TV show and eventually becomes an overnight celebrity. She then uses her newfound notoriety to help racially integrate the dance show. With music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and a book by Mark O'Donnel and Thomas Meehan, the musical opened in August 2002 on Broadway and ran for over 2,500 performances, winning eight Tony Awards and 3 Laurence Olivier Awards in the process.
