Though the Iowa State football team started playing in 1892 as Cardinals, official recognition came only in 1894. Their name was changed to the Cyclones after a resounding whirlwind victory over the Northwestern Wildcats in 1895. Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa, was named in honor of the African-American Cyclones player who died of injuries sustained on the field in 1923. A victory bell outside this stadium is rung after every Cyclone victory. Out of 10 bowl appearances, the Cyclones have won three.
