Les Miserables, composed by Claude-Michel Schonberg with libretto by Alan Boublil, is said to the longest-running show in musical theatre history. Produced in 1980, it opened in Paris and went on to have multiple productions the world over. It celebrated 25 years on London's West End in 2006 and would become the longest running West End musical as well as the third-longest running show on Broadway. The musical is set in early 19th century France, where characters struggle for redemption and revolution, based on a novel by Victor Hugo.
