The Maryland Terrapins football team was fielded in 1892. "Testudo," a diamondback Terrapin turtle, is the team's mascot. The Terrapins were declared national champions in 1953 as the only undefeated, untied team. When at home, they play in the Byrd Stadium, named after Curley Byrd who was head coach for two decades. Several Maryland quarterbacks have played in the National Football League, and with nine ACC Championships and 23 bowl appearances, it's no wonder that six "Terps" have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
