Loosely based on the story of disc jockey Dewey Phillips, Memphis is a musical by David Bryan and Jo DiPietro (lyrics and book). Dewey Phillips was one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. The concept was developed by the late producer George W. George. It opened in the 2003-2004 season in Beverly, Massachusetts, and in Mountain View, California, later debuting on Broadway in 2009. In 2010, it picked up four Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical.
