The 1975 film and the ensuing cult popularity of Monty Python and the Holy Grail led to one of the Monty Python crew, Eric Idle, writing a musical based on the same story, Spamalot. John Du Prez collaborated with Idle for the music and the show opened in 2005, directed by Mike Nichols. It won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical for the 2004-2005 Broadway season. Just like the Monty Python movie series, the musical was heavy on improvisations brought out by its talented cast.
