The New York Philharmonic, the symphony orchestra based in New York City, is commonly referred to as one of the "Big Five" American orchestras. The Philharmonic's home is Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. Organized in 1842, the orchestra is much older than any other existing American symphonic institution. Its record-setting 14,000th concert was performed in December 2004. Alan Gilbert is the Philharmonic's current music director and Zarin Mehta is the orchestra's president.
