Alfred Hitchcock's 1939 film, The 39 Steps, was adapted to a four-actor version by Patrick Barlow (based on the concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon). The play is a farce and performs the entire film nearly verbatim. These four actors play multiple roles, one actor playing the protagonist, one actress playing three women and two other actors doubling up as villains, men, even inanimate objects. This makes for a light comedy, filled with in-jokes and puns centered around the spy story from the original film.
