With music by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones, The Fantasticks is a musical that opened off-Broadway in 1960 and continues to run at the West End and on Broadway itself, thus making it the world's longest running musical. Loosely based on Edmond Rostand's play The Romancers (or, Les Romanesques), the story is about two fathers who trick their children into falling in love with each other. The tale is said to be influenced by other similar-themed literature, including Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, as well as Pyramus and Thisbe.
