Doo-wop vocal group The Platters was formed in 1953, ushering in the early beginnings of the rock and roll era. Noted producer/arranger Buck Ram created a distinctive sound for the band, which put them in a new genre altogether. They toured extensively, working with The Penguins and opening in Las Vegas at the Maxim, and later at the Four Queens for 10 years. They later played at the Las Vegas Hilton and the Sahara as a tribute group. The band did see some Billboard chart success in the late 1950s, and in 1990 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
