Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench formed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1976. Their music can be classified as heartland rock. Along with Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon, the band hit its stride in 1978 with its second album You're Gonna Get It!, which went gold. They have several popular hits to their credit including "American Girl," "Free Fallin'," "Breakdown," and "Mary Jane's Last Dance." In 1999, the Heartbreakers received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, after a career of award-winning music and a number of successful live shows, which they continue to perform today.
