Though the Wake Forest University football team has been playing collegiate football since 1888, the nickname "Demon Deacons" was coined in 1923 by a school newspaper editor after the team defeated Duke University (then called Trinity) under coach Hank Garrity. BB&T Field at Groves Stadium is the venue for their home games. The Demon Deacons became the smallest school ever to play in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) when they defeated Georgia Tech to clinch a berth to the Orange Bowl. Of the nine bowl games they have played over the years, they have a 6-3 record.
